Even in the strand of Eastern teaching exemplified by Maximus the Confessor, Russell concludes that he “is anxious to exclude both a Eutychian fusion of the divine and the human and an Origenistic ascent of the pure intellect to an undifferentiated assimilation to Christ. Deified human beings become god in the same measure that God became man, but although penetrated by divine energy they retain their created human status.”234

Biblical Support for Theōsis

The overall biblical and theological context for our participation in the divine nature has been unfolded throughout the course of the book. If we are looking for specific biblical passages to support it, we could include everywhere that draws attention to the compatibility between God and man, to the incarnation, to Pentecost and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and to the transformation of believers into the image of Christ. In a number of passages, however, the theme comes to the surface in pronounced ways. Probably the first that springs to most minds is 2 Peter 1:3–4:

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature.
